Eastbridge
study finds most voluntary/worksite companies
have published standards for selling voluntary products
AVON,
CONNECTICUT, USA (June
14,
2007)
There
has been a lot of attention over the past few years on
appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the insurance
industry. Most of the attention has been focused on other
parts of the insurance world as opposed to the worksite
or voluntary market. But the issues are important for all
insurance companies, regardless of market specialty. In
a recent Frontline Report, Eastbridge Consulting
Group explored specifically how voluntary carriers are
handling ethical standards and how they make certain their
brokers and enrollers (i.e., the independents they deal
with) are behaving ethically.
“The majority of the companies responding
to our survey say they have published ethical standards for voluntary
selling,” says Gil Lowerre, president of Eastbridge. “Most
of the companies have standards for both brokers and enrollers
and they publish these standards as part of the broker contract,” adds
Lowerre. In addition, two-thirds post the guidelines on the company’s
producer website, and half discuss the standards in training
schools. One-third of the respondents mail a copy of the standards
to each producer. “The ‘leading edge’ companies
require the producer to sign a document indicating that he or
she has read the standards and agrees to follow them,” says
Bonnie Brazzell, vice president.
