Exodus: Why Companies Exit the Worksite Market

How many companies have "come and gone" in the worksite market over the years? And, perhaps more importantly, why did these companies leave the market?

The answers to these questions might just surprise most carriers.

According to Eastbridge's Exodus: Why Companies Exit the Worksite Market report, only a handful of companies have actually exited the worksite market. Although there are a number of companies that are "no longer around" due to acquisitions or mergers, they still have worksite operations (just under a different name). Additionally, many of the players that entered the market are still "dabbling" in it.

Many of the companies that have exited the market had entered it for the wrong reasons, according to the study participants. Most entered the market to solve a sales or results-related problem in another business line—usually the company's core business. Unfortunately, worksite seldom solves such problems. Other study participants ventured into the market simply because everyone else was doing it.

The Exodus: Why Companies Exit the Worksite Business study looks at the experiences of nine carriers who either exited the worksite market or who studied the market but were never able to implement a program. In addition to information by carrier, the report details some of the common "mistakes" made by carriers and gives some recommendations on how to run a successful worksite business.
